OEM vs ODM for Electric Scooters: Building Your Own Brand

BY EVMOTO EXPORT TEAM·UPDATED 2026-06-12· 7 MIN

OEM vs ODM in plain terms

OEM (original equipment manufacturing) means the factory builds an existing model under your brand: your decals, badge, colors and packaging on a proven platform. ODM (original design manufacturing) means engineering-level changes — new body panels, different battery architecture, custom frames. Of the thousands of EV suppliers in China, most offer OEM; only a fraction can execute true ODM without quality drift.

For distributors, OEM is the rational starting point: brand equity without tooling risk, on a vehicle that already has type approval.

What can be customized at container MOQ

  • Colorways and decal sets (per-container color mixing is normal)
  • Tank/panel badges and printed logos
  • Seat stitching and trim colors on selected models
  • Cartons, user manuals and PDI checklists under your brand
  • Charger plugs and labeling for your market

What needs tooling money

Unique plastic body panels, custom light signatures, new dashboards or frame geometry require molds — typically a five-figure investment per part set, amortised over committed volume. Be skeptical of any factory that promises free tooling: the cost is either hidden in unit price or the "custom" part is an existing mold with your sticker on it.

Homologation under your brand

For the EU, the type approval can name your company as the manufacturer's representative, and COC documents can carry your brand — but the approval itself stays tied to the technical file. Plan the certification path with the factory before printing a single carton; re-homologating after a panel change costs more than the panels. Details on the approval system are in our EEC guide.

EVMOTO runs OEM programs from one-container MOQ across the catalog — decals, badges, cartons and market-specific paperwork included. Describe the brand you want to build in the inquiry form and we scope it with the factory.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum quantity for private-label electric scooters?

With EVMOTO, one container (mixed models allowed) is enough for decals, badges, colors and branded packaging. Engineering-level ODM changes require committed volume negotiated per project.

Who owns the design in an OEM deal?

The factory owns the base platform; you own your brand assets (logo, decal artwork, packaging design). For ODM with paid tooling, ownership of molds should be written into the contract — always.

Can I get exclusivity for my country?

Regional exclusivity is normally tied to annual volume commitments. It is negotiable per model and market — raise it early in the inquiry.
